C-section scar and treatment in London with our women’s health physiotherapist
A caesarean birth, most commonly known under the term C-section, is the delivery of the baby through the incision of the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Most often, when a incision of this type happens, the healing process starts with the formation of a scar tissue.
A scar, made of collagen, is a fibrous tissue that replaces the original tissue after a surgical incision or injury. With a quality and elasticity inferior to the normal tissue, scars can bring various consequences to people in general and in this case, to women who went through C-section, resulting in pain and sensitivity around the scar tissue, postural change, pain around the connective tissues in other areas of the body…

What are the possible symptoms resulting from a C-section scar?
In general and not only for C-sections, the first and common symptom is the sensitivity of the scar itself and the lack of elasticity, reducing mobility around the area. But that’s not it – the connective tissues can as well become restricted with other possible symptoms.
In women, a C-section scar can lead to different consequences:
- Pain, numbness around the scar
- Reduced mobility
- Posture affected, sensation of pulling
- Weak abdominal muscles
- Low back pain
- Urinary urgency
What can physiotherapy do to treat C-section scars?
Even if the scar looks ‘good’ on the outside, it doesn’t mean it’s the same on the inside. With physiotherapy, massages on the scar will help eliminate adhesions and increase the scar’s elasticity. Our women’s health physiotherapists will mobilise it in different ways: stretching, lifting, breaking, brushing… But they will also teach patients to self-massage at home, stretch and to gently return to appropriate exercise levels.
What is the goal of physiotherapy when treating C-section scars?
C-section scar physiotherapy rehabilitation will help:
- Mobilise the tissue
- Reduce adhesions between the abdominal wall layers and the scar
- Start to load the abdominal muscles appropriately with exercises
- Release tight and/or overactive abdominal muscles
- Teach correct pelvic floor and deep abdominal contractions
- Teach correct breathing strategies
Why is it important to mobilise C-section scars?
Because of the possible consequences C-section scars can lead to, mobilising it regularly will improve numerous aspects.
If future pregnancies happen, if the scar has been mobilised enough to increase its elasticity, women will not feel any pain or pulling from the scar because of the growing belly. Mobilising the scar will help it ‘grow’ together with the belly and not making it appear like a shelf.
It will also help with the posture: by not feeling any pain anymore around the scar, women won’t curve their back in order to protect themselves from the pulling sensation, which will as well lead to the absence of low back pain, generally appearing because of that poor posture and lack of scar mobilisation.
And, of course, the sensation around the scar will be able to come back.
When is it good to start mobilising a C-section scar?
It is advised to wait at least 4 to 5 weeks after the delivery/surgery before starting any post C-section rehabilitation. Also, waiting for a longer time isn’t a bad thing. It is never too late to check on your scar.
